A key focus of the PA Governor's Institute for Educators in Construction Technology Careers was the Pennsylvania Academic Standards. During the week, the institute participants learned how to help their students learn what they should know and do in Mathematics and Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Sessions also emphasized the need for students to learn employability skills, as defined by the Secretary's Commission on Necessary Skills (SCANS) and occupational skills, as identified by new state-wide building codes and construction industry leaders. Within the five day conference, the teachers learned how to revise their teaching strategies in order to teach students the academic standards, along with employability and occupational skills. By the end of the week, the teachers revised a lesson plan so that students PA Academic Standards and SCANS skills while they learn construction skills.
