About this Governor's Institute

This Institute aims to help instructors learn strategies to improve Career and Technical student achievement of the Pennsylvania Academic Standards. Participating instructors will:

  • Learn and practice a research-proven technique to increase student performance in mathematics classes and standardized tests like the PSSA.
  • Relate the jargon and methods of their technical content to vocabulary and procedures used in mathematics.
  • Develop mathematics lessons and assessments that can be used in technical classes.

Who Should Attend This Governor's Institute?

You are the right person for this Institute if one or more of the following describe you:

  • You want your students to reach the PA Academic Standards.
  • You want to learn how to teach the mathematics that is required in your technical career area.
  • You have benefited from professional activities such as the Conference on Integrated Learning.

Teamwork Required

Participants will work in groups of 2-3 people to complete the learning projects at this Governor's Institute. Registration priority will be given to instructors who register in teams. Teams may be: two CTE instructors plus a mathematics instructor or 2-3 CTE instructors.

However, instructors who cannot organize a team are welcome to register also. Individuals who are accepted to participate will be assigned to teams on Monday of this Governor's Institute.

Performance-Based Activity

Participant teams or individual participants will be required to bring a lesson plan and the related assignments and assessments for technical content. During the Governor's Institute, participants will revise the lesson and the exercises to include mathematics instruction and assessment tools. The finished products will be evaluated. Participants whose work quality is a B or better will earn two college credits from a university of the State System of Higher Education (not Penn State University).

However, instructors who cannot organize a team are welcome to register also. Individuals who are accepted to participate will be assigned to teams on Monday of this Governor's Institute.

Professional Community

In addition to the workshops and project time, this Governor's Institute will provide participants with opportunities to meet and network with CTE and mathematics instructors from across Pennsylvania. Learning and recreational opportunities will include activities at the conference site and other locations nearby in the Hershey/Harrisburg area.
